Sand and Sorcery Films

Trying to soak up the desert feels:

So obviously the 3 Conan films.

I also watched* (though not necessarily enjoyed):

Hercules
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Prince of Persia
300
300 Rise of an Empire
Immortals
Jason and the Argonauts
The Scorpion King (All 5 of them, yes 5!!)
Ator the Fighting Eagle (All 4 of them)
Clash of the Titans
Wrath of the Titans
The Warrior and the Sorceress
Deathstalker (All 4 of them, see above)
Barbarian Queen
The Barbarians
Red Sonja
Flesh and Blood
Kull the conqueror
Troy
Kingdom of Heaven
Alexander
Gods of Egypt
Hearts and Armour
The Arena
Beastmaster
Beowulf
Conan the Adventurer
Xena
Gunan
Princess of Mars
John Carter
Amazons
In the name of the King
Season of the Witch
Black Death
The Great Wall
Last Knights

However as I ran out of desert themed films I ended up setting for anything.
Some of these films are great and some are a waste of your time.

Let me know what else I should be watching!

*Some may be more fantasy than desert fantasy, but hey beggars can't be choosers.

  1. For the era, you should definitely watch Ladyhawke. But there are a few on there that I've not heard of, let alone seen. Five Scorpion Kings? Why would anyone watch beyond the first?? And I tried to watch Great Wall, but lost interest about halfway through and gave up.

  2. Think I saw that as a young 'un.

I know right, 5 Scorpion Kings...

  3. Kingdom of Heaven (the long vesion) would be by first recommendation and Beastmaster the second - but, k-tshing, you´ve got them already (and I know you disklike Beastmaster....).
I agree with Robey on the Scorpion King (I like that one too despite it´s more on the "humorous" side) - but the following? Nah.
The desert voyage of Björn in the series Vikings (i think it was season 5) was interesting too and the Silk Road voyage of Ivar in the current season too. I posted the trailer a few weeks ago on my FB site and the trailer made me WHOOAH!
You missed to mention Prince of Persia - Sands of Time but I think to remember you watched him already.
The indie fantasy movie Westender fourth act plays completely in the desert. Sadly, the English language movie isn´t on YT any more. The German version is still there however.
    Here´s the English trailer:

However, the movie stuff is limited! But I wouldn´t limit myself to movies. More on that topic later. If you can stand them take a look at various Russian, Indian and Chinese movies. If you haven´t seen it take a look at the Russian movie Wolfhound - it may look a bit weird for our "western" eyes though. And the movie 47 Ronin from 2013 has some fantasy elements.
There´s a reason why I reguarly point in my posts to the east.
There was A LOT of action in those areas in the past three to four thousand years and the historic Silk Road sometimes looked like a Hyborian Age becoming reality IMHO. If you got the time and the money you may take a look at the two video games Silk and Legions of Ashworld. Both are Lords of Midnights clones (yes, the Spectrum game from the eighties). Silk is an interesting take on the Silk Road in the 3th century BC and not a bad game but I can´t really recommend Legions of Ashworld despite it´s interesting desert fantasy world.

  4. Oooh yeah did like 47 Robin.
(PS - did mention Prince of Persia at the top)

Hercules is one of my favourites, it has a nice spin on the tales.

    1. Uh, missed it. I´m a bit divided on 47R. It was well done but I´ve got a problem with the "European" character played bey Reeves. I love the original story and I read a lot about it. On the other hand the whole movie was very well executed and had some great scenes.

Anyway, there´s another one I remember that may fit in the list and that´s Hundra. Roughly same quality as the Ator ones.

    2. Hundra looks amazing, alas can't find it anywhere.

  5. Uhm, thanks for the Hercules tip - I avoided the movie because I thought it was in the same style as the series or the old sandals movies. Couldn´t be more wrong.
I hope I can take a look at the comics it´s based on too.

    1. I think it is one of the best fantasy movies for a long time, dark and moody, with comedy but not in the form of slapstick sidekicks.

It has a nice angle on his legend too I thought.

    2. The "centaurs" scene alone is great! And I didn´t expect it so dark, tbh. I expected more something like the Scorpion King and got this. I really wonder why I didn´t notice this movie earlier.
